Jogen Chowdhury

Born in 1939 in erstwhile Bengal, now Bangladesh, Jogen Chowdhury studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata, followed by a course at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaus Arts, Paris in the year 1967. He is famous for his ability to successfully marry traditional imagery with the zeitgeist of contemporary paintings in a skilful manner. His early works show an attention to figuration that carries through in his current pieces.

About Jogen Chowdhury

Born in 1939 in erstwhile Bengal, now Bangladesh, Jogen Chowdhury studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata, followed by a course at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaus Arts, Paris in the year 1967. He is famous for his ability to successfully marry traditional imagery with the zeitgeist of contemporary paintings in a skilful manner. In 1966, Chowdhury was awarded the Prix le France de la Jeune Peinture in Paris, and, in 1986, received an award at the Second Biennale of Havana, Cuba. He was presented the Kalidas Samman by the Government of Madhya Pradesh in 2001. He has participated in the Sao Paolo Biennale and the Havana Biennale to name a few. Jogen has held many exhibitions in India and abroad. He lives and works in Shantiniketan, West Bengal.
