Dhaneshwar Shah

Dhaneshwar Shah graduated from the college of Arts and after receiving his MFA began lecturing there. Currently the recepient of a prestigious residency in Australia he has also been given the Civitella Ranieri Residency award in Italy. The Lalit Kala Akademi in 2006 conferred him with the National Award for painting. About his work: Committed to what he calls beauty of scale he plays constantly with the size and proportion of objects. Bigger things get smaller, smaller things get bigger. The use of perspective to focus and foreground objects, the bright earthy range of coloursand the repitition of forms for metaphor and outline all derive from his confessed admiration for the miniature tradition especiallly in the Mughal and Rajasthani styles. Objects of everyday life, culled from his immediate surroundings as well as a range of vibrant animal figures inhabit his canvases. Presently Dhaneshwar is in the process of completing a short documentary on the tribal art of the Bastar region.
